With the backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kenya and the diversity of scenery from open plains, rolling hills, valleys, escarpments and rivers, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is one of the country’s oldest and more exclusive safari experiences. Lewa is also renowned as a not-for-profit wildlife conservancy, particulary well-known for its rhino and Grevy zebra programmes, and its investment in livelihood and educational support for local communities.
Accommodation at Lewa: The Lodge comprises of 9 rooms, plus a spacious sitting room, and dinning room (with great views of the surrounding countryside). There are 6 hillside cottages, each ensuite with sitting area, fireplace, and private verandah, and a further 3 garden cottages with ensuite bathrooms sharing a sitting room and fireplace (perfect for families and small groups of friends). Guests are invited to use the library/billiard room in the private main house. There is also an infinity pool and tennis court. There are extensive gardens around the properties, and a small farm from which much of the fruit and vegetables for the meals are sourced. The nearby stables house the horses and ponies used for trekking.
There are numerous opportunities for wildlife viewing within the conservancy. There is as good a chance of anywhere of seeing all of the “Big Five”, plus Lewa is (unfortunately) one of the only game parks where guests are almost guaranteed to see the endangered black and white rhinos. Games drives, walks accompanied with trained Maasai guides, horseback treks (complete beginners are welcome) plus small plane rides are amongst the possibilities. Walking Wild is a camel safari outfit based out of Lewa Wilderness.
