This is a rugged semi-arid region noted for its pastoralist communities. Past the equator and the majestic Mount Kenya the landscape opens into the wide savannah broken by hills and distant mountains. In recent years a number of private ranches have combined cattle ranching and wildlife conservation, including black rhinos and other endangered species.
The Samburu Game Reserve, the Shaba National Park and the Buffalo Springs Game Reserve are located in close proximity to each other and offer some of the finest game viewing opportunities. Rare animal species like the reticulated giraffe, the gerenuk or giraffe antelope, the Gravy’s zebra, the sable antelope and eland thrive and are in abundance in this region. It is a great area to visit if one wants to go off the beaten track, yet enjoy a luxurious break and support eco-tourism.
