Some of the finest trout fishing in East Africa can be enjoyed on the equator on Lake Rutundu on the northern slopes on Mt Kenya (and the more remote Lake Alice, a further short 1-hour hike up the mountain). The lakes (often described as mountain tarns) are an ideal spot for fishermen and hikers alike, within an unusual equatorial-alpine setting and enjoying extensive views, and 1-3 kg fish may be caught. There are 3 casting platforms and a punt on Lake Rutundu (but no facilities at Lake Alice, making the fishing that bit more of a challenge). Previous experience in fly-fishing is not necessary as help is to hand.
Lake Rutundu Log Cabins are situated on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya, at 10,200 feet or 3,100 meters, just above the forest line. In total privacy, these log cabins are positioned overlooking Lake Rutundu, surrounded by alpine moorland. There are 2 log cabins, each with open fireplaces and ensuite bathrooms, which can accommodate up to 4 people.
