Fresh water fishing

There are a number of opportunities for good recreational and sport fresh water fishing. The British adventurer Ewart Grogan was responsible for introducing trout into Kenyan waters in 1905. (Grogan was a larger-than-life character who led an expedition from Cape Town to Cairo at the age of 24. He was to later to donate land on which Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital In Nairobi was founded in 1947, in memory of his wife). There is still some very good trout fishing to be had for the adventurous and the enterprising. Generally speaking, the more remote the location, the better the fishing, which is why the waters of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountain range survive as fishing destinations. The waters are often crystal clear and the streams are great for upstream and downstream wet fly fishing and, especially in late afternoon, delicate dry fly fishing. The fish grow big in the Mount Kenya lakes. A 4lb rainbow is not uncommon. The air is pure and cold, the food abundant and they will give you a memorable struggle.

Rutundu seems to be just a spot on the map on the side of Mount Kenya. But for anyone who has ever stayed in its two log cabins, fished its lake and trekked its stream, it’s a holy of holies.

Kenya has a number of fly-tying enterprises and is now estimated to be the source of 25 % of the world flies.
